There is growing importance, demand and opportunity for businesses to adopt accessibility across their digital products, their communication with customers and how they conduct business.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7478 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/atwdev.co.uk\/basda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Capture-Ability-SIG-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"Description of Launch event\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Designing for users with varying levels of impairment and exclusion ensures that all user interactions are perceivable, understandable, operable and robust.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why inclusive design is so important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3bn <\/strong>people globally live with a disability<\/li>\n<li>Est\u00a0<strong>14m <\/strong>disabled people in the UK (1 in 5 of the population)<\/li>\n<li>Numbers\u00a0grow year on year due to an ageing population and\u00a0advances in medicine<\/li>\n<li>There are more than\u00a0<strong>2m <\/strong>disabled people in work in the UK<\/li>\n<li>The number of disabled people in work has increased by <strong>3m <\/strong>since 2013<\/li>\n<li><strong>80% <\/strong>of disabilities are acquired between the ages of\u00a0<strong>18 \u2013 64<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Only <strong>4%<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses are focussed on making offerings inclusive of\u00a0disability<\/li>\n<li>Of over\u00a0<strong>500\u00a0<\/strong>MTD for VAT products less than\u00a0<strong>1%\u00a0<\/strong>have declared themselves accessible<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevaluable500.com\/\">Valuable 500<\/a> initiative<\/strong> estimated that companies are losing $13tn in sales by ignoring disabled consumers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>BASDA\u2019s direction of travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>BASDA has already started this\u00a0journey and our goal is to bring our members\u00a0with us. We will champion this important topic\u00a0through a new Specialist Interest Group\u00a0focused on Ability which launched in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson of the Ability SIG commented &#8220;We recognise that a collaborative approach, working with members and specialists in the industry, will help create awareness, understanding and a structured way forward that will help us all embed best practice regarding \u2018ability\u2019 across our respective businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We were delighted to have secured fantastic industry guests to join us at the launch event, speakers from businesses that brought real value as they spoke about their own personal and business journeys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helen Moloney, Managing Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/allthingsweb.co.uk\/\"><strong>All Things Web\u00ae <\/strong><\/a>presented on their direction of travel as they start their ability journey, the process adapted for both their business and BASDA&#8217;s digital footprint, challenges that organisations may face and how they are bringing their clients with them on the journey.<\/li>\n<li>Robin Christopherson MBE, Head of Digital Inclusion, <a href=\"https:\/\/abilitynet.org.uk\/\"><strong>AbilityNet <\/strong><\/a>presented on why prioritising digital inclusion in everything an organisation does is critical \u2013 from a culture, development and\u00a0people perspective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For members to move their Ability agenda forward, it\u2019s important to have sponsors and champions within your business.
